Periodontics
Dentistry.
Periodontal treatment helps manage gum disease and protect supporting bone. Whilst periodontal disease is not currently reversible, it can be arrested and gum health maintained. Treatment is a specialist skill, allied with our hygienists and meticulous oral hygiene regime at home. Treatment can take from 6 months to several years, and regular hygiene is a lifelong requirement. This is vital as unchecked disease will result in tooth loss and may degrade the jaw bone to then not allow for implant placement.
What to expect.
Assessment, treatment and maintenance care.
Specialist support prevents progression, preserves bone support, periodontal ligaments and so protects against tooth loss. Stabilised gums allow for a more comfortable daily experience when eating and drinking, and retention of natural teeth for longer. We have an in-house Periodontist specialist.
Suited to
Patients with advanced gum disease.
Good to know
Healthy gums support overall oral and systemic health.
A calm,
considered visit.
What are the symptoms?
Bleeding gums, recession and bad breath are common signs. In extreme situations, teeth may become mobile. Eating and chewing becomes difficult.
Can gum disease be reversed?
Early gum disease may be reversible; advanced gum disease can often be stabilised but currently not reversed. There are many projects to recover gums but thus far none have become widely successful so proper maintenance of oral hygiene is important.
How is it treated?
With professional cleaning and tailored care by a Periodontal specialist.
Will treatment hurt?
Treatment is tailored to your comfort. We use anaesthetic spray to make the treatment comfortable.
Can it cause tooth loss?
Untreated disease can lead to tooth loss so it is important to address the issue as soon as is possible with the right level of treatment.
