Hygiene
Dentistry.
Professional hygiene care supports healthy teeth and gums. A professionally qualified clinician (Hygienist, Therapist or Dentist) carries out an inspection of the oral health related specifically to gums, pocketing, and plaque buildup. Then a thorough clean is carried out to remove all calculus (plaque build-up) on the enamel and also just below the gum line. Pocket depth (how far down the gum has come away from the tooth) is measured. The enamel biting surfaces and fissures are cleaned and checked for cracks or pits. The teeth are polished to give a nice shine and remove superficial light staining. Finally, diet and oral hygiene cleaning regime is discussed with advice given to increase effectiveness of cleaning, and improvement of diet to prevent acid erosion, food trapping, decay and staining.

Good to know
Good home care complements hygiene visits - its a team effort.
A calm,
considered visit.
Why see a hygienist?
To remove deposits that cannot always be removed at home. To get an assessment of brushing and flossing effectiveness, to get advice on diet impact on the mouth. To know how well you are doing with home hygiene routine.
How often should I attend?
Depends on your oral health needs, we recommend twice a year for a normal healthy adult.
Will it hurt?
Most patients tolerate treatment very well. The ultrasonic cleaning tool we use can be replaced by manual tools for more comfort. If the gums are inflamed or bleeding, we have anesthetic spray that will numb the area to be worked on. The mild discomfort will settle quickly.
Can it help bad breath?
Yes
Does it help gum disease?
It plays an important preventive role. Home oral hygiene is critical to address gum disease; the hygiene session is an important support towards good gum health.
